Elderton GSM Barossa Valley 2022

Zunächst überrascht die etwas hellere und doch purpurrote Farbe, die dann aber bei etwas höherem Füllstand nachdunkelt ;) Diese ist den 43% Grenache geschuldet, die dann wiederum ein auch für die pflaumenwürzig-rotbeerig-ätherische Nase sorgen. Die perfekt getimte Lese der Frucht mit korresponierend kurzer Fassreife von nur 7 Monaten in gebrauchten, französischen Fässern lässt diesen Wein alles andere als marmeladig rüberkommen, die Frucht von Himbeeren und Pflaumen wird von einer herzhaften Würze unterfüttert, die mich beim ersten Verkosten an Wildgerichte denken ließ. Saftig, aber straff mit toller Spannung und Präsenz bis ins lange Finish ist dies ein weniger schwerer Wein als die anderen im Elderton Portfolio, aber er trägt die klare Elderton-Handschrift und lässt sich jetzt schon schön und über die nächsten 5+ Jahre immer schöner trinken. Karaffieren Sie ihn kurz oder geben Sie ihm im Glas etwas Zeit sich zu entwickeln. Dieser Wein offenbart mit der Zeit und etwas Luft eine größere Komplexität als man auf den ersten Schluck vermutet…

Our Greenock vineyard, located in the west of the Barossa Valley was added to the Elderton family in 2010. The 60 acre vineyard has plantings back to 1915 and a terroir that has been in demand by many of the Barossa’s elite winemakers.
Anbau: Certified sustainable – AWRI.
Use of glyphosate: No.
Spraying: Predominantly sulfur and copper are used in the vineyard and when required systemics. We don’t use soil active/ pre-emergent herbicides or insecticides and haven’t for many years.

I really enjoyed this modern expression of Barossan Grenache blend. It showed that natural generosity of fruit seen in quality Grenache but also impressive underlying complexity that will build over time. Aromas of red licorice and baked earth with touches of game and ground mixed spices are vibrant and focused. It then boasts attractive volume of sweet and savoury flavours laced with earthy tones nicely supported by a gentle tannin bite. "After a couple of years not making a GSM, we are excited to bring this wine back in 2022! The blend is one which falls naturally together, with all the fruit this vintage coming from our Greenock Vineyard. Grenache, the base for this wine, has an ability to deliver sufficient power yet with an elegance and restraint on the palate which is quite unique. Grenache and Mataro were co-fermented in open cement vats to produce a vibrant and delicious backbone for our blend. We then chose a batch of Shiraz from Greenock to add a little mid palate weight without taking away the distinctly Grenache tone and lovely savoury line in this wine.
