Elderton Neil Ashmead Grand Tourer Shiraz Barossa Valley 2022

Von 33-68 Jahre alten Rebstöcken aus den beiden Lagen Greenock und Nuriootpa – zwei echte Filetstücke. Beide sites reifen immer vor allen anderen und haben besonders viel blaue Frucht in ihrem Aromenspektrum, was diesen Wein schon relativ jung sehr verlockend macht, zumal, wenn man eine große Vorliebe für Blaubeeren hat. Lilafarben und nach Beeren, Vanille und etwas Süßholz duftend, sitzt der Wein im Glas und sagt: steig ein und wir drehen ´ne Runde!
Ein mächtiger Anschub am Gaumen nimmt einen gleich mit, dabei reist man sehr weich gepolstert. Einer smoother ride durch ein sommerliches, kaltes Beerenkompott, ausbalanciert mit etwas würzigem Pfefferschinken, Oliventapenade und feinpudrigen, schokoladigen Tanninen. Dicht, cremig und sehr lang mit einem Nachhall von leicht salziger blauer Frucht, danach noch Pflaumen und Kirschen mit Vanille. Was für ein Geschoss – damit kann man sich gut ein halbes Stündchen vor dem Essen schon beschäftigen. Oder zum Hirschrücken? Beides eine schöne Vorstellung. Ich glaube, der Wein dürfte sogar noch so ein bis zwei Jahre liegen – der hat Potential für mehr als nur lecker!

Winemaker´s Comment: Style Medium bodied, vibrant yet serious. This wine is a unique expression of Barossa Shiraz from our Nuriootpa vineyard planted in 1954 and more recently our Greenock vineyard, from Shiraz planted in 1980. These two parcels, whilst surrounded by other blocks of Shiraz, act quite differently. They are often the first to ripen and have a beautiful distinct and powerful blue-fruited note balanced with a very linear expression of Shiraz on the palate.
Vintage: In 2022, both our Greenock and Nuriootpa vineyards were lucky to escape damaging hailstorms. Mild conditions throughout the ripening period allowed for optimum ripening with very little rain pressure around harvest time .
All the fruit for this wine was handpicked, with picking starting at Greenock and then finished at Nuriootpa, before co-fermenting the fruit in open concrete fermenters. 16% whole bunch from our Greenock vineyard was placed carefully in the bottom of the fermenter before destemming the remaining fruit on top. After 9 days fermentation on skins, the new wine was pressed off to a combination of new and seasoned French oak. The wine was left on lees post malolactic fermentation, for the duration of its time in oak, with frequent lees stirring helping to build mid palate creaminess and seamless integration.

The late Neil Ashmead was a sports car nut, and I've always liked this wine for its purity and the gear stick imprinted on the capsule. Estate-grown fruit, 82/18% Greenock/Nuriootpa, matured 14 months in French oak puncheons. Satsuma plum, dark cherry and macerated berry fruits with hints of baking spices, earth, violets, roasting meats, olive tapenade, espresso and dark chocolate. Full bodied yet energetic and vital with deep, pure fruit, a tight, fine tannin frame and a regional thumbprint that is long and true. Drink by 2033.
