Jaffurs Petite Sirah 2018- AUSVERKAUFT -

Einer der wenigen Petite Sirah aus Santa Barbara kommt von Jaffurs. Und wenn man ihn probiert hat, fragt man sich, wieso es nicht mehr davon gibt, so gut ist er!
Der Wein stammt aus dem alteingesessenen Thompson Vineyard. Seit 2020 gehört er zur neusten Apellation Kaliforniens: Alisos Canyon. (Infos weiter unten)
Schwarz-Purpur. Beeindruckender cool-climate kick-off mit Veilchen, Cassis und Blaubeereis. Frucht,
Barrique, Schokolade, rauchig, süß... Das riecht gut! Am Gaumen auch dunkle Früchte aus aller Herren Länder, Cassis, Waldbeeren, aber vor allem Blaubeeren. Jugendlich, schön satt mit diesem schokoladigen, rauchigen Teer-Tannin-Duo, das am Gaumen so viel Spaß macht. Der Wein bleibt dadurch trotz seiner Wucht irgendwie fein und gut trinkbar. Wenn Petite Sirah so richtig spitze ist, dann ist das schon krass. Nicht umsonst heisst es bei Jaffurs:

ALISOS CANYON
Aus diesem kleinen Canyon zwischen den Valleys von Santa Barbara und Santa Ynez kommen besondere Weine. Sechs Jahre steckte man daher nochmal in die Erforschung und Dokumentation des mit knapp 100 Hektar Wein bepflanzten, kleinen Filetstücks in der Nähe von Los Alamos. Entscheidend für die Anerkennung war der feinsandige mit Kreide und Feuerstein durchsetzte Untergrund, der wurzelechte Rebstöcke erlaubt. Hier stehen fast ausschließlich Syrah, Grenache und andere Rhône-Rebsorten, dazu noch erlesen Italienisches. Auch Manfred Krankl von Sine Qua Non gehört mit zur Szene, er hat 2010 seinen The Third Twin Vineyard in den Hügeln oberhalb von Thompson angelegt. Joey Tensley von Thompson sagt nach 27 Ernten: “What sets it aside is the rolling hills and cool afternoon winds.”

Winemaker's Comment:

The 2018 Petite maintains power, structure, and purity of fruit. Long and silky with cocoa powder, earth, and coffee, this Petite should age for close to 15 years.
Your favourite recipe for this wine:
Steaks over an open fire pit; the wine’s power can hold up to sweeter and mildly spiced sauces. Definitely with smoked and seasoned meats.
Vintage notes:
Cool, even year with few heat spikes created a balanced fresh vintage. Higher than average yields really favored the thicker skinned variets as they held up well across the cool and early season moisture.

Vinous 93 points ~ The 2018 Petite Sirah Thompson Vineyard is deep, inky and extravagant. Unctuous fruit dominates over nuance and varietal character, but I am not sure how much that truly matters, as the 2018 offers tremendous appeal. The typically incisive young Petite tannins are pretty tamed here, and that just allows the up-front boldness of the fruit to come through loud and clear.
