Beschreibung

NEW | Neuer Jahrgang, vor Kurzem eingetroffen!

Beautiful elegance and purity, a wonderfully harmonious assemblage of the richness of white peach, the crunch of grapefruit, the complexity of subtle struck flint reduction and the understated support of classy French oak. Brilliant zest and verve of crystalline acidity define an outstanding finish of sensational lineand length. 96 points

Winemaker´s Comment: Aiming for elegance, restraint and the ability to age, acid is bright and there’s generosity of flavour. Typically it shows white flowers, citrus, and nectarine notes. The 2020 vintage was very low yielding, which resulted in great concentration. The cool ripening conditions produced Chardonnay with intense flavours and excellent balance.
Vintage:
The vintage threw up a number of challenges but the weather during the ripening period was extremely kind. February saw perfectly even ripening and resulted in grapes that were small, packed with flavour, and with higher than normal acidity.
Source:
From Piccadilly, Lobethal and our Lenswood Vineyard, at 455–500 metres elevation. Undulating with east and west facing aspects, the soils are brown loams over clay with broken shale on the ridges. The vineyard was planted in 1999.
Winemaking:
Der Wein reifte 9 Monate in französischen Barriques (Mix aus alt und neu): "Special care is taken not to over oak the wine, maintaining fruit integrity."

Background: The Shaw + Smith winery was built in 2000 giving us the ability to whole-bunch press chilled grapes for the first time, and underpinning the evolution of style from that first M3 Chardonnay vintage in 2000 through to the present day. The most significant event since then came in 2012 with the purchase of the Lenswood vineyard.

Ideal serving temperature: 10-12°C.
Favourite Recipe: A luxurious match with kingfish ceviche.

Halliday Wine Companion - Tony Love - August 2021
Sourced from 3 vineyards in Piccadilly, Lobethal and the estate’s high-elevation Lenswood block. Whole-bunch pressed, fermented and matured on lees in French barriques and puncheons. The first thing that strikes you is an elegance that is so fundamental to the style and respectful to the elite fruit within. The faintest of oak lifts adds a complexity to start, but the energy and concentration of the fruit become the prime focus on the palate. It's all about chardonnay's finest flavours and a vibrant acidity to drive it long into the future. 98 points

Andrew Graham – Oz Wine Review – June 2021

Aching young. Ultra fine, delicate and yet has a buxom beauty to it. I opened it too cold, and the banana post ferment esters were very prominent. But underneath its fine, filigreed, arguably too much so. White peach, tangy acidity, it’s a bit disjointed with the fruit competing with oak and some very delicate vanilla bean. Detailed, and plenty of latent power, just needing time. 93 points

David Sly – Decanter – July 2021
Savoury notes take the lead in a striking tenor voice. Lacks the feistiness of previous vintages, but 2020 was hardly kind in the Hills. Clean, firm and very well built this is the elegant, talented diplomat that shows no emotion. 94 points.
