THE ROYAL NONESUCH FARM Red 2021

Bouquet aus süßen roten und blauen Früchten mit einem Hauch von Lavendel und Zeder. Am Gaumen dann fast sanft mit viel Cassis und Kirsch, dahinter dann aber schwarzer Pfeffer, Sojasauce und wieder die Macht der Frucht mit vollem Extrakt. In seiner Komplexität sicher noch ganz am Anfang, aber von Anfang an ein Genuss wie fast alle großen Weine. Und ein Wein für abends.

In der Jugend sehr schön über zwei Abende zu verteilen. In diesem Jahr begleitete der Wein bei Hildebrands am Wochenende den neuen Eschbach-Roman mit dem Titel "Die Abschaffung des Todes" – Begründung: der Baum habe etwas von Memento Mori und der Roman spiele damit. Und mit seinem Genre, indem er postuliert: „Am besten, Sie lesen dieses Buch, als sei es ein Roman.“ Das Fazit am Sonntag: Was als Gag begann, passte ganz wunderbar, wir waren überwiegend am Schweigen, Zuhören und Bechern; haben nur hier und da über den Roman und den Wein gesprochen. Beides zusammen ergab zwei sehr gelungene Abende, die durch den Wein auch nicht zu düster wurden ;) Ich werde ihn einfach als einen Weltklasse Rotwein genießen. Dieser Jahrgang (425 Kisten) ist in den USA übrigens bereits ausverkauft.

Winemaking: The grapes were cold-soaked for 7 days with twice daily pump-overs, then fermented with wild yeasts in concrete tanks and foudre with with mix of punch-downs and pump-overs for 15 days total maceration. Fermented 37% whole cluster. Pressed to 500L and 225L barrels. 20% new. Aged for 20 months.
Winemaker´s Comment: This wine captures the wild, yet peaceful identity of this incredible vineyard. Exotic aromas of lavender, blackberry, adobo, black pepper, and petrichor soar from the glass. The palate packs flavors of blueberry, orange peel, sassafras, and hints of citronella. Supple and profound, the mid-palate builds toward a dense mouthfeel that is juxtaposed by salinity and driving acidity.
Vintage: Drought vintage with a long, cool season. Late harvest, great density and freshness.

Dunkel rubinfarben, fast blickdicht. Veilchenpastille, Holunder und Brombeere, aber auch Wildpflaume, Himbeere, Birnendicksaft, immer wieder neue fruchtige Serien. Kakaobohne und dezentes Holz. Der Gaumen entfaltet zunächst alkoholische Wucht, differenziert dann aber sehr fein auflösend mit sandigem Tannin, reifer, ganz natürlich wirkender Säure und in delikate Komponenten auffächernder Abgangsfrucht. The 2020 Red from Royal Nonesuch Farm is savory and intense, blending dried black cherries with peppery rose and lavender. It flows easily across the palate, pleasantly sweet yet wonderfully balanced, with a stern mineral core to contrast. It lingers incredibly long and is full of primary concentration. A coating of fine-grained tannins frames the experience nicely. The Red is a co-fermented blend of 73% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 5% Graciano and 2% Clairette Blanche. 2026 - 2034- By Eric Guido on March 2023 (95)

The 2021 Red checks in as 70% Grenache, 17% Graciano, and 12% Syrah, with the balance Clairette, all of which spent 18 months in barrel. It has a rocking nose of crunchy black cherries, mulberries, peppery herbs, and graphite, with medium to full-bodied richness on the palate. This pure, vibrant, flawlessly balanced beauty brings plenty of richness and length while staying focused and graceful. It's beautifully done and should have 10-12 years of prime drinking. (94)

Bordering the western reaches of Paso Robles, the historic York Mountain AVA is home to the critically acclaimed (and brilliantly named) Royal Nonesuch Farm.
Here, owner and winemaker Anthony Yount is dedicated to making singular wines from this serene 3 hectare seven-acre vineyard at around 500m above sea level. Yet it’s so much more than just vines: it is where three-generations of the Yount Family live and play; where they raise live-stock and grow fruits and vegetables. It’s an oasis for flora and fauna, and this natural energy is reflected beautifully in wines.
York Mountain is just 8 miles from the coastline, which provides a cooler climate and enough rain to mean the Estate can be dry-farmed year round. The thin soils sit on top of a wealth of limestone and chalk, framing Anthony’s graceful reds with a shimmering vibrancy.
Anthony makes three stunning reds on the Estate: the Royal Nonesuch Red 2021 is a fabulous blend that showcases fruit from across the vineyard, while the Hokum 2021 and Spine 2021 are pure varietals (Grenache and Syrah respectively). Considering how little is produced (425 of the Red and less than 100 each of the Hokum and Spine), and the excellent write-ups from Jeb Dunnuck, they represent incredible value.
