Wild Duck Creek Yellow Hammer Hill 2022

Was für ein Erpel! Ungläubig riechen wir nochmal hinein in diese tiefgründig-würzige, leicht rauchige Beerenmischung direkt aus dem Rotweinparadies und denken: ob der wohl Weihnachtswein werden könnte? Nach einem Gespräch mit WDC stellt sich heraus: ja. Wir feiern das schon, seitdem wir es wissen und hatten große Schwierigkeiten, so lange den Rand zu halten!

Dieser fast schwarze Shiraz ist schon ein Wort. Dabei faszinierend, wie schön der zunächst etwas wilde Wein im Glas dann wird. Das Mächtige wird satt und glanzvoll weich, die Würze stets in der Nase, am Gaumen aber eher nuss-nougatig, ein Hauch von Balsam, etwas rauchiges Barrique und sehr reine dunkle rote, blaue und schwarze Beeren und Kirschen, auch etwas Pflaume, alle sind sie zur Party erschienen, die Früchte und auch ein wenig Süßholz. Bei korrekter Lagerung kann dieser Wein spielend zehn Jahre alt werden und dabei immer feiner werden. Aber auch schon jetzt gilt: Ente gut, alles gut. Winemaker´s Comment: Yellow Hammer Hill is made using ultra-premium grapes from up to 7 different vineyards across our property and the region. These grapes are then fermented in stainless steel open fermenters before being basket pressed to tank. The wine is then matured in concrete vat (30%), French oak foudre (30%) and smaller seasoned French and American oak barrels for 22 months prior to bottling. The blend of these varieties creates a wine of delicious opulence.

Vintage: 2022 was a classic Heathcote vintage. Drier than both 2021 and 2023, however rainfall came at the right times, maintaining healthy balanced canopies. Yields were down across all varieties. Sunshine was abundant and disease pressure was low which is generally typical of the Heathcote region.

Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon. Bitterschokolade, Blaubeermuffin, Menthol und Trockenfleisch. Kampfer. Öligkeit und feinkörniges, festes Tannin bestimmen den Gaumen, der trotz seiner Power erstaunlich »kühl« und diszipliniert wirkt. Der Alkohol bleibt komplett unmerklich. The 2022 Yellow Hammer Hill is a heady blend of Shiraz, Malbec and Cabernet and offers us a bouquet of garden roses, blood and roasted game, aniseed and cocoa. In the mouth, the wine is eminently balanced, and as per usual with Wild Duck Creek reds, the high alcohol feels strangely integrated into the fruit. This is balanced and good. Distinct from most other estates in Australia. 15.2% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink Date: 2024 - 2037 (93)

78/14/8% shiraz/malbec/cabernet sauvignon. Matured for 20 months in French and American oak, large foudre and concrete vats. "Crafted purely for enjoyment and fun," reads the back label. More than lives up to the claim with its soft, plummy, yummy approachability. Moves fast, delivering ripe black fruits, woodsy spice, chocolate, earth and leather across a fully expressive and tasty palate lined in supple tannins. Malbec brings an earthy, savoury edge, adding a touch of seriousness to the "fun." Long finish. (92 points)
