Dutschke Gods Hill Road "Neighbours" Shiraz 2020

"This, our 2020 GHR Neighbours Shiraz and 15th release of this wine, is for the first-time concentrating on Shiraz grapes grown on the old vines of Wally’s Block (the old Krieg vineyard), topped up with a few barrels of Shiraz from the St Jakobi vineyard."

Der Dutschke GHR "Neighbours" Shiraz 2020 ist wohl der letzte Jahrgang dieses Weins von Wayne Dutschke (er setzt sich zur Ruhe) und ist beim Weingut bereits ausverkauft.

Entstehung des Weines:
Vor 20 Jahren zog Wayne Dutschke mit seiner Frau Brenda in die God´s Hill Road, die ca. 2 km lang ist und an verschiedenen kleinen und alten Weingärten vorbeiführt. Er nannte sie liebevoll "our little patch of dirt", was sich nicht nur auf die gute Nachbarschaft auf dem Lande, sondern auch auf die abwechslungsreiche Bodenbeschaffenheit bezieht.
Für sich allein waren die Mengen vom Gotteshügel zu klein, doch Wayne brachte sie zusammen und fuhr damit in sein Weingut. So vinifizierte er in seiner Winery an der St. Jakobi Kirche den "God´s Hill Road NEIGHBOURS Shiraz" unter dem Motto: es kann der Frömmste sehr wohl in Frieden leben, wenn es den guten Nachbarn denn gefällt. Und sogar einen vollmundigen, von alten traditionsreichen terrarossa-Böden stammenden Shiraz machen, mit dem man sich am Gotteshügel über die (nicht vorhandenen) Zäune hinweg zuprostet.

Dieser Wein erinnert uns nicht nur daran, wie wichtig gute Nachbarn sind, sondern auch daran, daß Wayne Dutschke es einfach drauf hat, denn aus dem Stehgreif fiele mir niemand ein, dem ich diesen Wein nicht einschenken würde. Der Gods Hill Road "Neighbours" Shiraz hat nicht umsonst seit Jahren seine treuen Fans. Er ist schon weich und gut trinkbar, die Tannine fein, der Duft nach Brombeeren und Pflaumen deutet eindeutig auf das alte Land des Barossa-Tals hin. Die feinen Tannine und die weichen Fruchtnoten sind die Highlights des langen Finish. Trinken Sie ihn über die nächsten sechs Jahre, in denen er noch an Komplexität hinzugewinnen wird.

Auf Nanette und Robert Stakers altem mit Shiraz bepflanzten "Stalker Vineyard (Benno´s)" Weinberg und ehemaligen Grundstück von Benno Semmler gibt es viel rote Erde auf Ton; und dazu gibt es noch den ganz alten Weingarten von Daphne und Wally Krieg, der bereits in den 1920igern angepflanzt wurde.
Anbau/Viticulture: Most of what is planted on Wally and Daphne Krieg’s vineyard are gnarly old vines planted during the 1920s and 30s on a gentle sloping beautiful red brown earth. All vines are Rod and Spur pruned, planted on own roots, hand picked and maintained using minimal intervention. The Staker vineyard is a 8 hectare planting of Shiraz on undulating red brown earth on what used to be part of the old Semmler farm. The original homestead circa 1860 still stands today. The Staker vineyard was planted approximately 20 years ago and is all set up for mechanisation along a single wire trellis. Vines had been spur pruned until recent years when it was decided to go back to traditional rod and spur pruning. Neither of these two vineyards are certified organic or biodynamic, but minimalistic viticultural methods are utilised on both.

Winemaker´s Comment:
Gods Hill Shiraz often shows great fullness with ripe plum and red berry flavours. 2020 is no exception. Fragrant ripe fruit with dark cherry and plum characters appear on both nose and palate. The sweet aromatic plummy fruit is supported with soft drying tannins of spicy oak.
Vintage:
Generous rains of 320mm fell during late Winter into early Spring (from May through to September 2019), and all was set for a great start to the harvest. October, November, December and January were then all extremely dry, with only a total of 24mm falling during these 4 months. Crop levels in the vineyard were low and as were approached harvest vines were becoming stressed, then approximately 35mm of rain in early February giving a huge boost for both grape grower and winemaker.
Grapevines were also very happy, utilising this moisture and extending the ripening season to bring the grapes to physiological maturity without the stress of drought conditions. Harvest took place on the 2nd of March 2020 with the Shiraz juice having marvellous natural acidity and pH, intense fruit characters and deep colour.

Dutschke GHR God's Hill Road Neighbours Shiraz 2020
There’s a wonderful integrity to all of Wayne Dutschke’s wines, and this blend captures the atmosphere of his undulating dirt road in the Barossa’s south. Black plum and blackberry fruit is nicely structured by dark chocolate oak and fine-grained, confident tannins that will only blossom in time.
