Beschreibung Weinpass **Schatzsucher-Wein** Curt - unser leicht exzentrischer Winzer mit dem güldenen Händchen für Rhône-Rebsorten- schreibt assoziativ und gewohnt schräg über den weißen Grenache: "You are slicing through the rainforest with a machete, cracking open bright citrus, unripe pineapples, watercress scented leaves and pepper plant, when you suddenly find yourself at the base of an immense, spring fed waterfall. The slate sides of the cliff are coated in dewy moss, it is cool, clean and expansive. The 2015 Groundwork Grenache Blanc is your portal to this place, it captures the characteristic balance of refreshment and density of which only Grenache Blanc is capable." Winemaker's Comment
“Midway upon the journey of my life I found myself within a dark forest For the straightforward pathway had been lost.” (DANTE’S INFERNO I, 1-3) Groundwork is all about the fundamentals. Putting to use the empirical knowledge Curt has gained from making wine for his first label, Sans Liege. He seeks to bring his experience to a new set of wines that embrace the soul and simple living of the Rhone. Groundwork is built upon comfort and confidence as a winemaker, trusting in the fruit, the vineyards and his own rich experience as he guides you on this mystery tour. Vineyard(s): Kopak, Beato and Last Frontier Three choice sites are selected and picked on the early side of ripeness to keep this one zingy. Kopack, Last Frontier, and Beato are three of the most respected vineyards in Paso for this often overlooked white Rhone variety. The grapes are cold settled prior to fermentation and a relatively quick and painless ferment occurs in stainless steel tank. It is left to settle for 5 months prior to being racked to bottle. Vintage notes: Middle to end of drought years. Picking again was fairly easy with no abnormal hot or rain events at harvest. Yields were low more than likely due to persistent drought conditions but as a result flavors were high and concentrated. Appellation: Paso Robles Soil Type: Calcareous Marl Production: 900 cases Ageing: 5 months in Stainless Steel Tanks Barrique? No. Fermentation: 100% tank fermented clean under glycol, Malolactic conversion arrested after primary fermentation completed Rückenetikett: best laid plans. This Grenache Blanc has diverged from many of my projects. It´s become far more classical than post-modern. I will burn down the blogs that try to make sense. Fad-chasers, please forget me. Cool, clean & expansive with a balance of refreshment & density. "The 2015 Groundwork Grenache Blanc is like slicing through the rainforest with a machete, cracking open bright citrus, unripe pineapples, watercress scented leaves and pepper plant, when you suddenly find yourself at the base of an immense, spring fed waterfall. The slate sides of the cliff are coated in dewy moss, it is cool, clean and expansive. The 2015 Groundwork Grenache Blanc is your portal to this place, it captures the characteristic balance of refreshment and density of which only Grenache Blanc is capable." (Curt Schachlin) OVERVIEW LEAN BUT RICH: old school nuance, modern soul FOOD FRIENDLY:enhances meals instead of covering them up CROWD PLEASER:will wow both geeks and novices, alike Empfehlung zum Essen: Bold salads with melon and feta, rich fish dishes, thai food Other Notes: Serving Recommendation: Chill in refrigerator 20 min, twist cap and quaff. Cheers! Aging Potential: 3-5 years. Bitte aus großen Gläsern trinken und nicht eiskalt.

UncorkedVentures, 2016: Enter Curt and Sans Liege. One of the things we’ve come to like quite a bit about the Central Coast, specifically Paso Robles and much of the Santa Ynez Valley is that the vineyards are relatively easy to keep straight. San Liege boasts a virtual who’s who of vineyard sources that we enjoy. Alta Colina, Bien Nacido, Alta Mesa, Larner and a few others (where’s the Tierra Alta inclusion though?). To us, as outside observes, it’s clear that there’s a serious effort at the highest quality wine here. Ok, so enough about the background-what about the Grenache Blanc in your glass? The wineries tasting notes read: Vibrant and cool, the Groundwork Grenache Blanc is like a English garden impossibly fully bloomed in winter. A fresh nose of tangerine, lemon grass, Bosch pear, white cherry and passion fruit leads to a brightly spiced, mineral laden palate of fresh thyme, star anise, orange blossom, wet flagstone and lemon oil, it finishes with pleasantly trill acidity much like nibbling a meyer lemon. At our initial taste, we were impressed by the roundness of this Grenache Blanc. When we’ve tried to find other Grenache Blanc’s to ship, we’re often confronted with wines that have a level of acidity that many of our customers would find offputting. That acidity isn’t evident here, although you’re not going to confuse this wine with a class round Napa Valley Chardonnay either. There is plenty of the traditional slightly spicy finish here as well, which makes Grenache Blanc one of the best pairings with roasted pork chops, or in my house - pork tenderloin. Overall we walked away thinking that this was simply a great summer wine and honestly, one our favorite Grenache Blanc’s that we’ve had in quite some time. We’ve seen quite a few quotes from Schalchlin talking about how he feels inspired by the Northern Rhone (who in Paso isn’t right?) but he goes the next step and creates a wine which the French would find familiar, it’s enjoyable with plenty of fruit but imminently in balance. We’d challenge anyone to find a comparable wine at this price point.
