Nur noch wenige Flaschen.
Sogar ganz frisch geöffnet schon ein überwältigendes Bouquet aus süßen roten und blauen Früchten, etwas Barrique-Vanille und einem Hauch von Zedernholz. Am Gaumen übernimmt er auf die sanfte Tour gleich alles. Ergebnis: sofortiger Kick von Brombeere, Kirsche und Glück. Tief, aber nicht anstrengend, vollmundig, aber nicht breit. Strukturiert, aber nicht verschlossen. Lang, aber nicht alkoholisch. Ganz, ganz großer und schöner Wein, der an andere ganz Große denken lässt...
Internationale Schönheit im Sinne von z.B. den oben genannten Bordeaux oder - näher an uns dran - einem Hill of Grace, der international ist, „obwohl“ (schon ignorant genug, aber so läuft es eben oft) er aus Australien stammt oder ein Sine Qua Non, „obwohl“ er aus den USA kommt. Beide gesucht von allen. Weil eben objektiv Weltklasse.
Anthony hat sich da ganz bescheiden hochgearbeitet. Wie wir schon letztes Jahr festgestellt hatten, ist er schon lange kein „Talent“ mehr! Und noch können Sie diesen Wein einfach kaufen und trinken – tun Sie das bitte und genießen Sie einen phänomenalen Rotwein, den Sie nicht so schnell vergessen werden!
PS: Mushroom Bourguignon oder Spaghettini mit Trüffel, was für eine wunderbare Harmonie mit dem Wein!

This wine comes from Anthony’s own 7.5-acre vineyard located in York Mountain AVA in west Paso Robles wine region. It rests at 1800 feet above the Pacific Ocean between the towns of Cambria and Templeton, and boasts an incredibly diverse set of soil profiles, including rocky limestone, clay, and sand. Rainfall is almost four times that of the nearby town of Paso Robles, allowing them to dry farm many of their vines.
Rebsorten: 73% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 5% Graciano, 2% Clairette Blanche
Barrique: Yes. 20 Months in 25% new French oak barrels and 75% in neutral barrels.
Winemaking: Cold soaked for 3 days with twice daily pumpovers, then wild fermented in concrete tanks and foudre with twice daily pumpovers or delestages. 13 days total maceration. Fermented 27% whole cluster. Bottled without fining or filtration.
Winemaker´s Comment: Exotic aromas of black cherry, cracked pepper, orange zest, pine sap, and Oaxacan mole soar from the glass. The palate boasts scintillating flavors of blackberry, lavender, cocoa powder, and Pamplona chorizo. The surprisingly rich midpalate seamlessly transitions, with just the right amount of tannins, into a persistent and elegant finish.

The Royal Nonesuch Farm in Paso Robles is new to my ongoing series of discovery of some of the great wines of California. The first wine we enjoyed from this winery was the 2020 vintage of its white blend - the 2020 White grown, produced & bottled by The Royal Nonesuch Farm. We return to The Royal Nonesuch Farm today to try its red blend from the same vintage:
2020 Red grown, produced & bottled by The Royal Nonesuch Farm (Paso Robles, California).
This wine is a blend of 73% grenache, 20% syrah, 5% graciano and 2% clairette blanche. Following wild fermentation in concrete tanks and foudre, the wine was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels (10% new). It comes in at 14.4% ABV.
The wine showed a dark ruby color. Black cherry, raspberry preserves, vanilla, licorice, currant and oak all arrived on the rich nose. Black cherry, raspberry preserves, currant and licorice brought the theme of luxury from the nose to the palate followed by notes of oak and hints of tobacco leaf. The wine was full-bodied and exhibited good length along with soft tannins. It would pair very well with a roast leg of lamb. ~NE
